With rising polarisation in the country, Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh called for the government to conduct a detailed evaluation of the vernacular education system.
As such, Akmal called on the government to relook into the vernacular schools’ education ecosystem by inculcating nationalistic aspects, while strengthening its students' command of the Malay language.
“At the same time, we urge the government to improve the national education system and come up with measures to attract students from all races.
“The government should also consider interim measures such as medium and long-term road map towards an integrated education model, which is based on common values and sense of belonging among the multiracial nation, without setting aside the rights of races in Malaysia to preserve the heritage of their respective mother tongues,” he said in a statement today.
On Wednesday (March 6), Akmal suggested for Putrajaya to refine the schooling system.
“Perhaps, the time has come for a single-stream education system to be implemented,” he posted on Facebook.
His comments come despite the Federal Court’s dismissal of two NGOs’ bid for leave to appeal to nullify the validity of vernacular schools in the country.

On Feb 20, the apex court denied leave appeal for the Islamic Education Development Council and the Confederation of Malaysian Writers Association.
The groups failed in their legal challenge at both the High Court and Court of Appeal over the constitutionality of 1,302 Mandarin schools and 527 Tamil schools nationwide.
National dialogue space
Meanwhile, Akmal today further suggested the revival of a national dialogue space for the nation to explore new visions towards the integration of national education.
He also expressed concerns about the latest polemic developments that have “fuelled the raging division”.
“Everything that happened is a reflection of after almost 70 years of independence, there is still a gap in values and a separation of understanding among the multiracial Malaysians.
“Umno Youth believes that the increasingly impoverished tension is rooted in the system of separation and isolation that is implemented starting at the most basic level of the people’s lives, which is from schools.
“The time has come for Malaysia to end the separation and isolation,” he said.
There appeared an evil man now long in tooth, ashamed of his father, tormented by an inability to realise his own ethnicity. So what better solution than the Burnt Earth one.
There appeared an evil man now long in tooth, ashamed of his father, tormented by an inability to realise his own ethnicity. So what better solution than the Burnt Earth one. Nobody would believe us today if we told them that for 11 or 13 years we went through education without ever encountering Racism, that monster planted, nourished, protected, and harvested deservedly by that same demon.
Ahh, OMG and MS, How I wish you did not mention those days, those names from a lifetime ago when school was such a wonderful unforgotten experience not just in St. John's but in every school throughout the land that once was truly Malaysia. Sure, all schools had their share of Napoleons and Bros. Lawrence and teachers armed with rottans – but who cared! School was to live life in the full and occasional giving heed to some silly thing called lessons! Then Paradise was lost. Forever? There appeared an evil man now long in tooth, ashamed of his father, tormented by an inability to realise his own ethnicity. So what better solution than the Burnt Earth one. Nobody would believe us today if we told them that for 11 or 13 years we went through education without ever encountering Racism, that m-onster planted, nourished, protected, and harvested deservedly by that same demon. Yes, OMG and MS, we could write on forever. In the meantime, we must Cheer, Cheer and Courage display. And Shake Down the Thunder From the Sky.
