COMMENT | Strange bedfellows needed to realise dream of a better nation
COMMENT | The perceived wisdom now prevailing is that the next general election will bring no dominant party into power, hence political instability will continue.
In that scenario, party-hopping will be rampant, and there will be no time left for governing the country. Imbued with the shenanigans of the present crop of leaders, it is no wonder that people are getting frustrated, cynical and pessimistic about the political process.
It does not have to be that way.
Pakatan Harapan's clear victory in 2018 was premised on the simple idea that the sizeable bloc held by Anwar Ibrahim-DAP just needed a Malay leader of influence to bring them across the line.
It was a profitable venture because Dr Mahathir Mohamad was prepared to join them, not out of love for the progressive forces in the country, but because he wanted to defeat Najib Abdul Razak.
The mistake of Harapan leaders was plain to see. Having won the election, they allowed Mahathir time to derail Harapan and Anwar. All because they failed to see the clear signs before them (cabinet position can affect your vision) that Mahathir was not interested in making Harapan a success. Many believe that the “Sheraton Move” was his idea from start to finish...
If a man is after money, he's money mad; if he keeps it, he's a capitalist; if he spends it, he's a playboy; if he doesn't get it, he's a never-do-well; if he doesn't try to get it, he lacks ambition. If he gets it without working for it; he's a parasite; and if he accumulates it after a life time of hard work, people call him a fool who never got anything out of life Vic Oliver(8 July 1898-!5 Aug 1964) If all our current crop of politicians all they care about is money and wealth accumulation while in office. This is a short cut to a boring life. It will be most exciting to keep a record of what happen to the politicians who become excessively rich while in office, after they are gone, what happen to the next generation of his descendants. Like what historian did to Jonathan Edwards( 5 Oct 1703-22 March 1758) Edwards' descendants, they included a U.S. vice president, three senators, three governors, three mayors, 13 college presidents, 30 judges, 65 professors, 80 public office-holders, 100 lawyers, 62 physicians, 75 Army or Navy officers and 100 clergymen, missionaries and theological professors. There were practically no lawbreakers. If the politician were up right and honest, he will have Jonathan Edwards legacy. If not the destiny of Max Jukes await the politician who misused and abused his position and office. The legacy of Max Jukes were as stated: Jukes' descendants included seven murderers, 60 thieves, 128 prostitutes (50 of these women averaging 15 years of harlotry), 140 other convicts, 280 indigents and 440 who were physically wrecked by indulgent living through addiction to alcohol. Out of the 1,200 descendants studied, 300 died prematurely. Sixty-seven were reported to have contracted syphilis. Moreover, it was estimated that Jukes' descendants cost the state approximately $1,308,000 The law of nature is fair. What one sows, the same harvest shall be reaped.
