YOURSAY | ‘Alleviating Malay poverty - politicians only pay lip-service to it’
Mahathir and his children, for example, are all multibillionaires, being beneficiaries of the plundering of the public treasury that goes on through inflated gov't contracts. The MACC does not consider gov't contracts as corruption. It does not do due diligence on gov't contracts, nor does Bank Negara probe money laundering activities. AmBank was an exception on the 1MDB Scandal because bonds were pocketted and the public demanded action. The IRB is silent on inflated gov't contracts. Banks don't ask for the source of ill-gotten gains. There's a lesson on poverty for Malaysia from Pakistan. Imran Khan, addressing the Chinese Parliament shortly after he was elected, said the grinding poverty of Pakistan was due to corruption i.e. those with power transferring wealth to themselves from those who don't have power. He conceded that he was in China to learn how the country tackled the scourge of corruption. Apparently, he started his party after he studied the reason for Pakistan's grinding poverty and realised it was due to corruption. At first, he recalled, people didn't understand what he was preaching. So, his party could win only two seats in Parliament. Then, after 15 years, Khan's party came to power in the NWFP, the Pathan homeland in Pakistan. Southern Afghanistan is also Pathan. In the next national election, he became Prime Minister. Indian subject matter experts have estimated that as much as 70 per cent of Pakistan's national budget was being made off by the Army, the only institution that keeps the country together with its long-running "Hate India" campaign. It was to divide the great Indian Army that the British colonialists stole land from India to create Pakistan, ostensibly a homeland for Muslims. The Indian Army was the verge of slaughtering its British officers and the 100K British and their families in India. The Army felt in 1947 that the British would never leave India. The creation of Pakistan left half the Muslims in the subcontinent in India. Nehru and Gandhi have been blamed by history for the partition of British India which went on to form the Indian Union with 500 princely states. India's poverty was due to British colonialism which lasted 150 years.
