      A Sarawak airline? Why not?

      Francis Paul SiahPublished: Feb 7, 2019 8:57 AM | Updated: Feb 7, 2019 10:53 AM

COMMENT | A few days ago, Sarawak chief minister Abang Johari Openg disclosed that Sarawak is keen to set up its own airline very soon.

He said the state government was trying to revisit the old proposal, where it expressed an interest in taking over MASWings but its owner, Malaysia Airlines then, was reluctant to sell it.

“Sarawak is currently working out the details on a proposal to set up its own airline company. We have a few options to have our own small airline connecting Kuching with other strategic destinations in the region,” Abang Johari said at a Kuching event on Feb 1.

I support Abang Jo’s proposal for Sarawak to have its own airline. I think this is the first major plan of the chief minister since he became Sarawak’s chief executive two years ago which earns my support.

If they should do it, then manage it as a commercial enterprise instead of a state run airline. The market is small so profit is very small. Mas Wing could not survive, never mind about their small ATR planes and high cost flights, but simply because they did not have any business sense. Air Asia has taken over some of those domestic routes with their bigger Airbus and we could see a transformation. Passengers’ volume has increased. One wonders where all those passengers were when Mas Wing was in operation? The answer lies in affordability. People will take your service if it is cheap and affordable. The volume will make up for the profit. Even if it is little, if the overhead is taken care of, at least the business can survive until bigger profit looms. Tony Fernandez could make it in East Malaysia, we can only say that Mas Wing did not have what it take to operate an airline. So watch out what you suggest, Francis Siah, for it can only drill a hole in your state reserve if they are not lucky.

Yes collect Tax from the people and spend it on dumb things like an Airline . Walk around in anywhere you will find Roti canai Road , Rubbish everywhere , broken signage and so on and so on where the hell is our Tax dollar ? Yes after PRU14 we thought the BN era is gone but how wrong are we . Nothing is being done to improve and upgrade but spend our money on stupid things like a Football team more so we have state which has continue to throw our money into the drain like investing in a Theme Park . How about looking after our own state and making it clean and efficient. Now you say why not run an Airline. Only local Airline I know of are the row and row of 727 and 737 park at Subang Airport who own them ? Maybe Sarawak should also start its own Space Program how about that ?
